achieving the Togethercoloured instant is set to the poetry of e. e. cummings. The work consists of a set of 8 songs, which trace a relationship beginning with the starry-eyed mask of new love to the pain of having only memories. The music attempts to reflect this journey. Through the use of various compositional techniques and methods, each song attempts to create a different moment within the course of this relationship. The music commences by wearing a tonal pair of rose colored glass and moves to the absence of pulse and any semblance of a tonal center.
The couple's journey begins with the praising of youth and all its possibilities. "you should above all things be glad and young" extols youth and life through its lyrical melody and bouncing accompaniment. In "it is so long since my heart has been with yours", the couple, by the turns of life, find themselves separated. The voice expresses longing by reiterating the pitches within a small area, the keyboard accompanying with ramblings of memories and feelings. The voice finally breaks out of its distress with a loud declaration of love. "chérie" places opposing forces in juxtaposition. Ideas such as heaven and hell, life and death, and love and hate are placed with the same sentences. The music helps to express this by rapidly switching textures to paint the picture of a relationship in turmoil and lives being torn apart. The final two songs, "hate blows a bubble of despair" and "along the treacherous bright streets" find the singer lost and longing for the past. The music allows small glimpses of rhythms and harmonies that we have heard before, but they have changed from the happiness of a love blooming to memories of a past that has died.
